Soloman’s Poem Ketubah
Where has your beloved gone, O fairest of women? Where
has your beloved turned, that we may seek him with you?
My beloved has gone down to his garden, to the spice beds,
to graze in the gardens and to gather roses.
I am my beloved’s, and my beloved is mine, who grazes
among the roses. Song of Songs 6:1-3
King Soloman’s poetry from the Bible, is one of the very first of its kind that is known to the modern world. It seems that love poetry has not changed much. Ok. Perhaps to be as “awesome as an army” is not particularly the compliment we are looking for, today. Still, Soloman’s words of love have the power to resonate with us three thousand years after they were written.
Soloman’s Poem papercut ketubah carefully combines the beauty of the love poem, Song of Songs chapter 6, with the art of Hebrew calligraphy. The words of the poem spiral around and around the ketubah’s text like a joyful dance around a newly wedded couple. The words are animated by the circular motion which is heightened by the rhythmic color transitions—from cornflower to cobalt blue. All this is a masterful coalescence of the art of poetry, calligraphy and paper cutting into one perfect tour de force.
